Steady with Style

Hi all.  I joined some time ago but I have not introduced myself on this board.

I got into buying a Weimaraner for the purpose of hunting quail.  I search through lists of pointing/versatile breeds and fancied the idea of using the dog to hunt other game as well as upland birds.  I saw the picture of a weimaraner and thought it looked awesome.  This was the same breed of dog someone took to my grandmother's ranch in Mexico a long time ago, when I was a kid.  I never forgot that dog because it was a puppy and a had glow with it's grey hair and blue eyes, I thought it looked so cool.  Whenever anyone would fill up this one outdoor sink, the dog would climb into it and just sit in it for fun, so I'd fill up the sink just to watch it desperately attempt and then succeed to get into the water.

So I looked into the breed more and more, and searched and searched and read and read.  I found the NAVHDA website and the WCA website and it's list of breeders.  I guess I read enough horror stories about not buying from a reputable breeder that I actually became somewhat afraid of even buying a puppy, because I did not know for sure what and who was a “reputable breeder”

I finally began contacting listed breeders from the WCA website.  I found a handful in southern California and was pleased to find someone that was within 5 miles of me.  I'm fortunate to have met this person, because she was into breeding working dogs, and the others I'd contacted , I learned, bred for shows.

I went with her and a friend of her's to go check out a walking field trial in northern California, and we met up with another friend who owns and field trials a vizsla.

I decided to wait for her to breed her bitch and get a pup from her.  Good thing I did that.  Had I not researched and had I not met her, I could have just went out and bought any weimaraner from a “back yard” breeder.  Who knows what kind of dog I'd have ended up with.

Did I mention I wanted this dog for hunting? Well as little Sascha was growing up, we decided he had field trial potential. 

We ran him in puppy and derby as a pup, and eventually decided not to run him as a derby dog because he was running down and catching too many birds.

Now he is 2.5 years old and being trained by a pro running as a broke dog, and now I don't have a dog to go hunting with lol!  He's done a pretty good job for a dog that was supposed to be a meat dog.
